The use of carbon is somewhat problematic since there is no
sure-fire method to determine whether or not it is exhausted. At the
point of exhaustion, it leaches back into the water the very toxins
it absorbed. Stunting and sickness occur when phosphates, heavy metals and toxins
are released into the water.
To further complicate matters,
carbon can not discriminate between the harmful and helpful elements it
absorbs. It removes tannins and calcium from water as well, both of which are necessary for
good skeletal structure.
Some discus keepers use carbon to clarify or polish the water.
This is unnecessary in my opinion. In my facility, carbon is only used to remove medications.
If you wish to achieve clarity and provide the best environment for
your discus, more frequent water changes produce the best
results.
